    Maths Intent

At Farsley Westroyd, our mathematics curriculum is designed to inspire and engage all learners, providing them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in their mathematical journey. Our vision is rooted in creating a positive, inclusive, and challenging learning environment where every child can thrive.

We strive to foster a deep and lasting love for mathematics in all our students, nurturing enthusiastic learners who find joy in mathematical exploration and problem-solving. By presenting challenges that stimulate curiosity and resilience, we ensure that pupils appreciate the relevance of mathematics in their everyday lives. Through engaging lessons and real-world applications, students are encouraged to view mathematics not only as a subject but as a valuable tool that connects to their daily experiences and future endeavours.

Our curriculum is carefully aligned with the National Curriculum, ensuring that all pupils acquire a solid understanding of key mathematical concepts, including number, calculations, geometry, statistics, and measures. We use a mastery approach to learning, ensuring that concepts are broken down into small, manageable steps. This allows us to build pupils' confidence and depth of understanding over time. By utilising the Whiterose Maths scheme, we promote fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving as essential components of mathematical competence. At Westroyd we allot time daily to work on our arithmetic skills as the foundation for future learning. Emphasis that the endpoints for each year are achieved. We believe that all pupils, regardless of ability, should have the opportunity to fully understand and apply their knowledge.

We recognise and celebrate the diversity of our learners, adapting our teaching to meet the varied needs of all pupils. Our inclusive approach ensures that every child, regardless of their starting point, can progress and succeed. In the Early Years and Year 1, we implement the Mastering Number program to lay strong foundations in number facts, ensuring that all children build secure knowledge from the earliest stages of their education. We provide appropriate support and interventions to enable all students to access and enjoy mathematics, reinforcing our belief that everyone can achieve success.

Our curriculum aims to equip pupils with the ability to apply their mathematical knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts. We encourage them to rise to a challenge with confidence, using their skills as self-regulated learners to come to conclusions.  Problem-solving is a key focus, allowing students to practice their skills while understanding the importance of mathematics beyond the classroom. In a classroom environment where children learn and discuss together, we emphasise the value of working together, debating and challenging each other’s thinking. This reinforces the idea that they can achieve success as a community. At Farsley Westroyd, we are committed to creating a mathematical journey that is fun, enriching, inclusive, and empowering, supporting every child to reach their potential.

    Subject Strands

In our comprehensive mathematics curriculum, we provide students with a robust framework that encompasses a wide range of topics essential for developing a strong foundation in mathematical concepts. Organised into key strands, Number enables students to explore vital operations such as place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra, and negative numbers, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The Measurement strand hones essential skills related to length, height, mass, volume, money, time, area, perimeter, and converting units, enhancing students' ability to make meaningful comparisons and informed decisions in everyday life. In Geometry, learners engage with concepts of shape, position, and direction, promoting spatial awareness and creativity through exploration of shapes and their properties. Finally, the Statistics modules equip students with the tools to analyse and interpret data effectively, encouraging a sense of curiosity and inquiry. Overall, our curriculum is designed to ensure that students receive a well-rounded mathematical education that prepares them for future academic and life challenges.

Underpinning our curriculum are our key principles of

    ENJOY, ACHIEVE, BELIEVE, TOGETHER

    ENJOY

At Farsley Westroyd, we embed the principle of Enjoy into our mathematics curriculum by fostering an environment where learners can find joy and fulfillment in their mathematical experiences. We cultivate curiosity by presenting students with meaningful mathematical challenges that encourage exploration and deep thinking. By connecting maths to real-world contexts, we help pupils see the relevance and excitement of what they are learning. Our mastery approach ensures that every student can experience success and build confidence as they progress, developing a genuine enjoyment of mathematics. Collaborative learning plays a key role, allowing students to discuss and solve problems together, creating a supportive and joyful classroom atmosphere where every child feels capable and engaged.

    BELIEVE

At Farsley Westroyd, the principle of Believe is at the heart of our mathematics curriculum, where we are committed to nurturing every child’s self-confidence and belief in their mathematical abilities. We create a learning environment where all pupils are encouraged to embrace challenges and view mistakes as part of the learning process. Through our mastery approach, we ensure all children move as a team, building solid foundations that allow them to develop a deep understanding and belief in their capacity to succeed. We foster resilience and self-regulation, encouraging students to approach problems with confidence and perseverance. Collaborative learning further strengthens this belief, as children work together, share ideas, and support each other in their mathematical journey, reinforcing the notion that they can achieve their goals both individually and as a group.

    ACHIEVE

At Farsley Westroyd, the principle of Achieve is embedded in our mathematics curriculum by ensuring that every pupil has the opportunity to reach their full potential. We believe that all children can achieve success through perseverance, effort, and resilience. Our mastery approach ensures that every pupil is supported to fully grasp mathematical concepts before moving forward, enabling them to build confidence and celebrate their individual progress. By setting high expectations and providing the necessary guidance, we empower pupils to believe in their own ability to succeed.

    TOGETHER

At Farsely Westroyd, the principle of Together is equally important, as we foster a collaborative learning environment where pupils work in unison to solve problems, share ideas, and support one another. We encourage cooperative learning, where children learn from each other and develop important social and communication skills. This collective approach reinforces the understanding that success is not just an individual journey but one that is strengthened by teamwork and shared effort. In doing so, we cultivate a classroom atmosphere where everyone contributes to and celebrates each other’s achievements, creating a strong sense of community.
