Books - Change books on Wednesday. Your child will come home with 2 new reading books and a library book every Wednesday. Please make sure you have been reading at home at least three times a week. Please record any reading you have done in your reading diary. Your reading diary must always be in your bookbag so that we can read with you in school.

Spellings - New spellings will be sent home every Friday. Please make sure your child's spelling book is in their bookbag on Friday so that the new ones can be stuck in.  Please also see below our spelling page where you can easily access this every week. Please use your spelling book to practice them in. If there is evidence of practising, your child will receive a green point. Please also check which spellings have been marked as incorrect as these will still need to be practised.

Year Three End of Year Expectations

This table provides information for parents and carers on the end of year expectations for children in our school. All the objectives will be worked on throughout the year and will be the focus of teaching. Any extra support you can provide in helping your children to achieve these is greatly valued. If you have any queries regarding the content of this booklet, please talk to your child’s teacher.

Spring 2

Week 5

We've been completing lots of assessments this week. Mr Popple and Miss Martin are so proud of our progress. We absolutely smashed our reading! It just shows that all those extra interventions and making sure we're active learners in the class really pays off.

We've really being enjoying our maths topic of 'Mass and Capacity'. We've learnt how to count the different intervals when we're measuring. We can add and subtract different measurements as well as comparing them.

In English, we've  been learning how to use subordinate clauses to add detail to our writing. We've been building sentences and paragraphs using subordinate clauses about volcanoes that we can use in our non-chronological reports next week.

It was another TTR showdown at the end of the week.

Week 4

This week was Neurodiversity Week. Year 3 were given the task to learn all about ADHD. We looked at the different traits of someone with ADHD and realised we all had a few of them. We then talked about how we can help someone who is struggling with their ADHD. We put all of our wonderful ideas together to create some bright posters to have in the ASPIRE room to inform other children. Here is the link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1t9UHQgtDfU

In Science, we visited a graveyard! We looked at the different effects of 3 types of weathering. We discussed which rocks are most suitable to use for headstones and designed some signs for our school. We had to explain which rock we would use so that it lasts a long time.

In PSHE this week, we talked about our goals and aspirations. We worked together in a group to create bridges. We had 5 minutes to complete the task. Once we'd finished, we discussed how we achieved our goal. We planned ahead, gave ourselves small steps and discussed which roles everyone naturally took.

Week 3

What an explosive week we've had in Year 3!

For science week we were worm charming at Westroyd Park. We used instruments to persuade the worms to come out of the soil. We learnt that the vibrations from the instruments made the worms think that animals were coming so they come out of the soil to escape. We were so loud that Miss Martin heard us all the way from Go Outdoors!

We published our final volcano poem and performed it in our very own Year 3 poetry slam. Miss Martin was blown away with our personification, similes and expanded noun phrases. We made sure that we were loud and proud. We thought about our tone and pace at different parts of the poem to really make them come to life.

We've started our new writing topic where we will be writing a non-chronological report all about volcanoes. As it was science week we had a go at creating our very own eruption! It was so much fun! We then read "Escape from Pompeii" which we found so interesting, and can't wait to write about Mount Vesuvius in our reports.

Week 2

A start studded week! In the run-up to World Book Day we had the privilege of meeting the one and only George Webster! He told us all about his new book, why he wanted to become an author and how important it is to read and be kind.

World Book Day was an absolute smash again! We read some of our favourite books in the morning, including an old favourite, "The Book With No Pictures" which makes Miss Martin say some ridiculous things! We followed along with the Live BBC Lesson and in the afternoon we had a Book Battle! We had to hoose our favourite characters and create a speech about why they are the best book character. We then went against our friends to decide the champions.

In Geography this week, our atlas skills were put to the test as we were locating mountain ranges and volcanoes. We quickly realised that most of them were along the plate boundaries of the tectonic plates. We now know how a volcanic, fold and fault block mountains are created.

Week 1

We published our Boudica speeches at the start of the week. We then rehearsed them to make sure we had the appropriate expression and tone to try and persuade as many people as possible to join our fight. We performed our speeches in font of our tribe and demonstrated our best Boudica poses. Check out our model photos below....

We've had an explosive start back this week! We've started our new Geography topic, 'Why do people live near volcanoes?' and we're really excited about it! We are going to be writing our very own volcano poems. To help us get creative with this, we watched some eruption videos and interpreted a volcanic eruption through dance and drama.

Mr Popple and Miss Martin have been so impressed with our fraction knowledge! We've been able to order and compare fractions with different numerators and different denominators, and we've been working really hard at providing reasons for our answers.

Spring 1

Week 6

Another wonderful week in Year 3 to finish the half-term... Our Boudica speeches are ready to be performed when we return after our break, and we're very excited! We've decided we'd like to vote for the most persuasive one so watch this space when we return.

We became artists and worked together to make some magnificent sculptures and designs with our learning partners.

We took part in Safer Internet Day on Tuesday where we learnt all about how to spot a scam and what to do when things on the internet make us feel uncomfortable.

We ended the week in another Times Table Rockstar Battle. It was a tense final that 2 children from our class made it into! Unfortunately, we didn't make it to the final two against the reigning champion, but we're coming for Year 4 next time!

Week 5

This week we've been celebrating Children's Mental Health Week. Rosie the dog came in to tell us more about it and told us all about the training she had to go through to become a PAT dog. We loved stroking her and we made her feel very calm and relaxed. She really made us laugh when she played down with her tummy in the air ready for tickles! Some of us even taught her some new tricks.

We've really enjoyed maths this week! We've become really quick at being able to convert different measurements and we now know what it means to measure the perimeter of a shape.

We were a little nervous this week as we performed our sharing assembly but Miss Pashley said it was the best one she's seen! We were loud and clear and really impressed everyone with our Latin and marching skills.

Week 4

Another Roman filled week in Year 3 this week!

We were happily completing our reading questions when all of a sudden the Romans invaded our settlement! They destroyed our belongings, took some of prisoner and made us slaves and demanded we followed their way of life, laws, paid them taxes and they even told us how to dress! We had a tribe meeting and decided that we needed to fight back! We're currently working on our speeches to persuade other tribes to join us in our fight against the Romans.

We than had a visit from a real Roman soldier! He told us all about the different pieces of his armour and brought in some artefacts or us to look at closely. We were all very impressed with the sword and couldn't believe how heavy the armour was.

Finally, we discovered what it was like to be part of the Roman army. We learnt important commands in Latin and practised our army drills. It was tricky at first but we soon got the hand of getting into the wedge formation ready to charge our enemies.

Week 3

We have blown Miss Martin's socks off this week with our writing! We have been writing as Romans creating a Wanted poster in an attempt to catch Boudica. We have been including powerful expanded noun phrases, apostrophes for contractions and apostrophes for possession. We really got into character writing as the Romans!

We looked at the pros (for) and cons (against) for letting the Roman army invade our Celtic tribe at Maiden Castle. We worked in our groups to discuss our reasons.

Pros

Cons

Roman roads will help us to transport goods.

They will make us pay taxes but the money will return to Rome so we won’t see the benefits.

The Roman army will provide us with protection against other tribes.

They will change our religion and make us believe in Roman Gods.

New engineering such as Aqueducts.

We will have to follow new laws and rules which we might not agree with.

They will bring new laws which will then bring peace.

They will completely change our way of life and traditions that we’ve worked so hard to build.

We then formed a conscience alley where our chief walked down the middle and listened to our arguments. In the end, our chief decided that we shouldn’t let the Roman army invade our tribe so we fought against them but unfortunately this ended in defeat.

Week 2

This week was so much fun! We had an amazing adventure to The Yorkshire Museum in York. We looked at and had the chance to hold a lot of different Roman artefacts, completed missions, walked on a real Roman mosaic floor and even had the chance to prepare for battle just like the soldier's did! We loved using the swords and shields although we found falling into line and marching at the same time a little tricky. We learnt lots of interesting facts... but our favourite was that instead of using toilet paper, the Romans used a sponge on a stick that they would then pass onto the next person! Gross!

PSHE was really useful this week as our MindMate lesson this half term was all about change and how we can manage and cope with big changes in our lives. We talked about different strategies and created a poster of top tips to help other people.

In English, we have been reminding ourselves how to use apostrophes for contractions. The Romans wanted to be able to pass messages to each other about Boudica quickly so we had to use contractions so that we could write down as much as possible as quickly as we could.

Week 1

Happy New Year! We've had a great start to 2025. We've started our new history topic of Romans and met a very important person... Boudica!! She came into our class and we had chance to ask her lots of questions to find out all about her life. The Romans have now asked us to write a wanted poster because they want to capture her after she destroyed their cities they had built in Britannia.

In RE we were detectives and looked at some Islam artefacts. We worked in our partners to answer questions about the artefacts before we then found out their names and what they were used for.

Autumn 2

Week 7

Wow! What a jam packed final week we've had! We had a special Christingle assembly. On Tuesday, we went on a fantastic trip to Pudsey Civic Hall where we watched a live orchestra perform the music to The Snowman. We were all complimented on how well behaved and well mannered we all were! Thursday was SUPER exciting as we had our Christmas party! Miss Martin couldn't believe how much food we were able to eat and we had so much fun dancing and playing party games. Finally, we finished the Christmas week by all eating a delicious Christmas dinner together. We've had a the most magical week together and we'd like to wish our Year 3 family a magical Christmas and a very happy new year!

Week 6

This week we completed our DT topic by making our delicious seasonal tarts. We used all of our skills that we developed over this half term such as cutting, chopping, slicing and grating. The tarts we absolutely delicious and we can't wait to make them for our friends and family at home.

We also said goodbye to our wonderful teacher Miss Collado. Miss Callado has been with us for 8 weeks and we have loved every minute with her! We wish her all the luck in the world with her first class next year. We've asked if she will be our Gibraltar pen pal so we can keep in touch with her.

Week 5

This week, we have started our new writing topic of writing a broomstick. We read some more of The Worst Witch and we loved the chapter about her learning to fly! We wanted to create our very own broomstick advert. We had lots of fun designing our dream broomstick and we can't wait to start writing.

DT was another fun lesson this week as we got to try different ingredients in preparation for our final recipe. We enjoys the cucumbers and tomatoes but were not very impressed with the spring onions!

Miss Martin and Mr Popple have been super proud of us this week as we have completed our assessments. Some of us received full marks in our maths papers and we've really improved our SPAG scores. All of our hard work is paying off!

Week 4

In DT this week, we worked on our cutting, slicing and grating skills. We looked at how we can cut different fruits and vegetables safely and hygienically.

We also completed our first field trip in geography! We completed fieldwork that required us to look at an OS map of Farsley and plan a route that would allow us to see different landmarks of Farsley. We then followed our map and took pictures of the landmarks and circled where they were on the map. We then discuss the different land uses, such as residential, commercial, transport and recreational.

Week 3

It was another exciting week in Year 3 this week! We created our lanterns ready for the Farsley Lights switch on. We've really been enjoying our book in reading 'Our Tower'. We predicted it would be an adventure story when we looked at the front cover, but we quickly realised it was actually a poem. We have been using the 'meaning breakdown' skill to help us work out any words we are unsure of.

We paid a visit to Farsley Library. We listened to clues about books without looking at the covers to help us choose something we may not have looked at before. We then looked around the library and had to chose a book that we then pitched to the class and explained why we simply must take it back to school! 5 books were chosen and we're so excited to read them all. We can't wait for our next visit.

Friday was super exciting as got to dress up as witches again and make our very own laughter potions! We worked in pairs to select our ingredients carefully. We made notes on what we used, ready to then turn into instructions next week... and of course we had the Wicked soundtrack on in the background while we mixed our potions.

Week 2

This week in English, we looked at using different adverbs to describe time and manner. We wrote some steps for Mildred the witch to help her get ready in the morning. We use adverbs to tell the reader how to complete an action.

In RE, we looked at the ten commandments. We worked in groups to discuss which we thought were the most important and created a diamond 9 to show what we thought.

Geography this week was really interesting as we looked at an OS Map of Farsley! We used an OS Legend to help us to identify the different key features of the map and of Farsley. We then looked at the different land uses such as residential, transport and commercial.

Week 1

This week we started our new book in English "The Worst Witch". We attended 'Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches'. We had to wear a witches hat and cloak and come up with our own witch names. We are learning all the skills that we'll need to help us write a laughter potion for Mildred to use in her next potion class.

We also started our new topic in Geography which is all about settlements. We looked at the different types of settlements and whether these were linear, nucleated or dispersed. We'll be using all of this new knowledge when we go for a walk around our local area of Farsley.

Autumn 1

Week 8

What an amazing final week we've had!

Bush Craft Nick came in to show us all the different skills that people in the Stone Age would have needed such as creating our own fire! We also looked at lots of different animal bones and talked about how these would have helped up survive in the Stone Age by using their bones for different tools and weapons. We made our own charcoal and used this to create some cave drawings (We also decided to use it on our faces to help us when we're hunting). We then lit our own fire and of course, toasted some marshmallows. We wondered what Stone Age people would think about sticky marshmallows!

Friday was our first TTR day! We came dressed to impress in our best Rockstar outfits! We battled with Year 4 and the top people then when against Mr Popple! We had so much fun and we can't wait for the next Rockstar day next half term.

Week 7

In history, we learnt all about trading in the Iron Age. We started with the new vocabulary we would need such as export, import and barter. Then we played a really fun game! We all started with different goods and a list of things we needed to survive. We then had to barter with other people in our village to trade the goods we had to complete our list. Once we’d done all the trading we could within our village, we then had to travel to another village and trade with them instead. Some of us manage to trade successfully and ended up with a completed list. Others really struggled to barter and couldn’t find or trade all the goods we needed.

Some of us have been working with Rosie the dog. We love to see her on a Thursday, she's the highlight of our week!

Week 6

This week has been very exciting!

On Tursday we had our 'Wear Yellow Day' where we raised money for the Young Minds Charity on Mental Health Awareness day. We all wore yellow and completed some fun activities about mental health.

Friday was our 'Sheep Day'. We started the day with a visit from a local artist to show us how to draw sheep! We then learnt all about Samuel Marsden and how he transformed Farsley into a Merino Wool making capital, with wool that was even made for royalty to wear!

In maths we have begun to learn how to use the column method to help us add and subtract. In English we have learnt all the rules of using inverted commas. There are lots to remember but we are getting there!

Week 5

Well... What a busy week this has been!

We started off the week with Equilibria visiting us. The showed us some Islamic calligraphy. We explored some Islamic art, looked at extracts from the Qur'an and had a try at some calligraphy in Arabic and English using bamboo pens and water based ink. It was very messy but very fun!

We started our new book in writing this week "The First Drawing" Miss Martin read the book to us and it was all about what it would have been like to create the first drawing in the Stone Age. We then got to experience what it would have been like to draw in caves! We went into our very own caves where it was dark and cramped and drew animals and around our hands just as the cave people did. It was tricky to do because there was no light and the texture of our caves were bumpy.

We finished the week with our first Sheep Point Prize.... Chocolate pizza! We used a cookie for the dough, chocolate sauce for the tomato base, sprinkles for the cheese and marshmallows for the peperoni. It was DELICIOUS!

Week 4

This week we went outside to create some interesting art work. We created rubbings using different textures found in the playground.

History was really interesting as we became archaeologists and learnt all about the Amesbury Archer. We looked at the artefacts he was buried with and discussed how these provided us with clues about his life but didn't give us the whole picture. We also enjoyed learning about Stonehenge and would love to know why it was there.

In RE this week we read the story of Moses. We created a drama in our partners to show Moses talking to God as the burning bush. We thought about what Moses would be feeling and thinking.

Week 3

In English this week, we have continued learning to use different conjunctions and we have been expanding our noun phrases by including adjectives, prepositions and verbs. The setting descriptions they have produced have been out of this world with some very interesting vocabulary.

In PE we have been learning the names of different gymnastics positions, rolls and tucks. We had some excellent experts in the class who provided some great demonstrations.

We had a really exciting history lesson as we got to explore a Stone Age home called Skara Brae. We pretended to be archaeologists and explored the ruins that were left behind. We used a cool 3D model to help us do this. Have a look and see what you can find....

Week 2

This week we started our new text in English 'Stone Age Boy'. We received a letter from Stone Age Boy himself telling us all about his adventures and how he'd love us to read his book. We created a story map and started to learn about prepositions and conjunctions that we can use in our writing.

History was one of our favourite lessons this week. We looked at where the Stone Age began on a timeline. We used toilet roll to help us understand just how long ago it was. Each square represented 1,000 years. We used the whole toilet roll around the class and thought surely this would be long enough? Miss Martin then explained that we would actually need 3 toilet rolls in total to represent how long ago the Stone Age was as the first recorded piece of history dated back to 900,000 BC.

In reading we looked at the front cover and blurb of Stig of the Dump. We asked questions, make predictions and used our background knowledge to have a think about what the story might be about. We're very excited to start reading it next week!

We did our first ever Spanish lesson this week! It was so much fun. Please test us on the words we know! Practice makes perfect.

Week 1

Well... What an amazing first week back we've had! Everyone has worked so hard with their learning and have shown what proud Westroyd Learners they are! We have a very exciting year ahead and we can't wait to tell you all about it.

This week we learnt about British Values. We learnt what they mean and the importance of them all. We then worked together in our groups to create a drama that shows what life would be like if one of our British Values disappeared. We quickly realised that Britain would be an unsafe and messy place without them!

We have also looked at the Protected Characteristics. We discussed how we must treat everyone fairly no matter who they are and that some people need more help than others and that's okay. We should respect, help and show kindness to everyone no matter who they are or where they are from.

In maths, we have started our new topic of Place Value. We've been using different equipment such as base ten, beads and number lines.

We've started our new class novel 'The Wild Robot' which we're really enjoying and always ask if we can read one more chapter.

This week we also completed some learning about our Zones of Regulation which helps us to manage and understand our emotions. If you'd like to learn more about this please visit our Zones of Regulation page under 'Key Information' on the website.
