Welcome to Reception!

Each week we'll be keeping you up to date with a "blog". In addition to this, please read our half-termly curriculum map to find out what will be happening in Reception. 

Important information

PE - Thursdays. Please come to school in your PE kit on this day and this day only. 

Books - Change books on Thursday Your child will come home with a library book every Thursday.  Please make sure you have been reading at home at least three times a week. Please record any reading you have done in your reading diary. Your reading diary must always be in your book bag so that we can read with you in school. 

Phonics – We are leering to blend sounds into word orally and single letter sounds. Please watch "Fred Games" and the "single letter sounds" which can be found on the continuing reading – Phonics.  

Maths - Please log onto Numbots and practice with your child at home.

Autumn 1

Week 6

This week, we enjoyed exploring the story of The Little Red Hen, writing lists of ingredients and making our own bread by following instructions. We celebrated Harvest Festival, explored our sense of taste and enjoyed our Welly Walk. In maths, we investigated mass by comparing heavy and light objects and explored capacity using different containers. We also celebrated Yellow Day, learning about our emotions and how to look after our mental well-being. It was a wonderful week full of hands-on learning and fun!

Week 5

We have had another busy and exciting week in Reception! In Literacy, we have continued learning The Little Red Hen, focusing on the beginning, middle and end of the story and practising putting events in the correct order. In Maths, we have been developing our subitising skills, quickly recognising small amounts without counting, and exploring how 4 can be arranged in different shapes and patterns. In Understanding the World, we have been learning about our senses, exploring how our eyes, ears and hands help us discover the world around us. We also investigated how sound is made through vibrations and enjoyed making our own junk model instruments. We have also been talking about belonging and enjoyed meeting our Year 5 buddies this week and getting to know them.

Week 4

What a lovely week of learning we have had in Reception! In Literacy, we have started our new Talk for Writing story, The Little Red Hen. The children have enjoyed listening to the story, joining in with repeated parts, learning actions and beginning to create our own story map. In Maths, we have been exploring the numbers 2, 3 and 4, learning how numbers can be made up of groups of ones and finding and making collections of objects. In Understanding the World, we have been learning about our bodies, naming different body parts and talking about what they help us to do. We have also been talking about what makes a good friend. Well done, Reception, for another fantastic week of learning!

Week 3

This week we have been talking all about our families and learning about ourselves! We created self-portraits after learning about the artist Hanoch Pivan and made our home corner feel extra homely by adding family photos. We also learnt that all our houses are different, discussed where we live, and talked about being part of our local community. In maths, we’ve been working hard on key counting skills—learning that the final number we say tells us how many objects there are altogether, moving items to count them carefully, and even using magical "counting wands" and listening closely to count drumbeats!

Week 2

We've had such a fun week in Reception settling into our classroom routines and talking all about our feelings with The Colour Monster! The children also dived straight into their maths learning, they have been learning to subitise to 3 (instantly spot amounts up to 3 without counting), show numbers in different ways on their fingers, and hunt for tiny hidden groups of 1, 2, and 3. On top of all that, we got stuck into our phonics and have officially learnt our first 5 sounds!

Week 1

What a fantastic first week in Reception! The children have settled in brilliantly, making new friends and exploring every corner of the classroom. Outdoor play has been a hit, especially racing along the bike track! We're so excited for the term ahead.
