Farsley Westroyd Primary School & Nursery

Westroyd in the Community!

At Farsley Westroyd we are proud to be the oldest school in the village and have played our role in the development of Farsley over time. Our school building dates back to Georgian times, in part, and it is awe-inspiring to think about how many small people sat on the little stone seats by our front door waiting to come through our very old school door, at the start of the day, before sitting in our large grand school hall (great singing accoustics) for an assembly! We are actually the only school in the UK that has a sheep as their school emblem, which just signifies our strong link over time to the very successful local woollen mills, aided by the locality to the Leeds to Liverpool Canal. We have named our sheep Samuel. A vote was had by the children to name him/her. Having studied how wool came first to Farsley, the children decided that it was important to name the sheep after Samuel Marsden, who first brought Marino wool to the mills from New Zealand. Without the sheep, would there have been such a strong, long-lasting industry, and would our school have even existed? Therefore, we are very fond of sheep at our school. It makes us super-special and incredibly unique! As a community school, we intend to continue to play our part in the prosperity of the village, and you will regularly see us out and about visiting local businesses, on field trips, carrying out research or engaging in community projects. You will usually hear us before you see us, as we do like a good song and spreading our joy!
